As a Mellivora capensis aficionado, it actually pleases me no end to see them finally get the column inches they deserve. Almost inevitably though, it’s bad press. The latest smear comes courtesy of the BBC who are reporting allegations that British troops released a plague of Honey Badgers into the Iraqi city of Basra. The report goes on to rightfully praise Honey Badgers as “strange man-eating, bear-like beasts”.
For the uninitiated, the internet can provide you with a wealth of Honey Badger-related information. Their Wikipedia entry details all of their honey-eating, scrotum-biting ways. And I believe the film rights to this video, including the soundtrack, have been bought by Miramax.
Some people don’t believe me when I tell them about the ferocity of Honey Badgers. After all, I’ve never seen one. But Suad Hassan saw one, and lived to tell the tale courtesy of that same BBC article (emphasis mine):
“My husband hurried to shoot it but it was as swift as a deer,” she said. “It is the size of a dog but his head is like a monkey,” she told AFP.
